The virus spreads through skin contact affecting most people during their youth. While most infections eventually subside, close to 10% of the infections caused by the Type 16 and 18 strains could lead to high-grade cervical pre-cancers. Problem with the latter is that unlike other forms of HPV, it does not cause warts and any tell-tale symptoms that could warn the carrier.
