Hepatitis B is caused by a virus while transferring body fluids, including blood. It affects the liver and, in chronic cases, leads to either liver failure, liver cancer or cirrhosis, a condition in which the liver develops permanent scars. While adults recover fully despite severe symptoms, children and infants may develop lasting chronic infections from which they may never recover fully despite vaccines.
